Art, Food, and Culture Oh My!

From our arrival in Cape Town, the first thing I noticed was South Africa’s amazing attention to detail through art and documentation of history. The airport could have almost been considered a museum. Art that decorated the walls with dancing colors and cultural documentation accented by large sculptures of the big 5 (Elephants, Rhinos, Water Buffalo, Leopard and Lion).

When exploring Stellenbosch, there is a brilliant contrast between the Dutch influenced architecture to the more African influenced colors and patterns. These designs come to life with vibrant tones in the entire color spectrum overlaid by patterns of white and black. There is also color found everywhere in their beautiful gardens and landscaping. The pride in their art and culture is also seen in their love of food and social interactions.

Around the dining table or at the pub, we have tasted cuisines from around the world and met many amazing locals from a variety of different backgrounds. From political conversations to the serious topic of Rugby, you instantly feel accepted into this community. I have never experienced such a welcomed atmosphere in any of my other travels. There is a sense of pride and hope in every interaction we have experienced, thus far.

Although this beautiful country is still struggling, hope abounds. Every travel experience I have had has impacted my personal growth, this trip, has shown me how import culture and the arts are for the documentation of history and to inspire change.
